Observation Deck & Museum

The Observation Deck and Museum are open seasonally from mid-April through December and may be closed due to inclement weather.

Regular Hours:

  • Monday--Friday: 9 AM-5 PM
  • Saturday: 9 AM-3:30 PM
  • Sunday: 12 PM-3:30 PM
Closed Holidays: 
  • New Year's Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Eve
  • Christmas Day


🌆Description

The observation deck is 92 feet above ground level. From the observation deck, visitors may see a panoramic view of the City of Madison, including the lakes, the University campus, and the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. Inside the museum, visitors will see displays on the construction of the current Capitol, along with artifacts uncovered during construction. Guests may also get a close-up view of the inner Capitol dome from the Rotunda viewing deck. 

Access to the observation deck, museum, and Rotunda viewing deck requires walking up approximately 48 steps; unfortunately, ADA access is not available.

  • Once inside the Capitol, take the West Hallway (North side) elevator to Floor 4.
Or
  • Once inside the Capitol, take the North Hallway (West side) elevator to Floor 4.
Then
  • Follow the signs up 2 additional flights of stairs to the observation deck, museum, and Rotunda viewing deck.
